The National Grid as a company
National Grid is one of the world’s largest utilities, focused on delivering energy safely, efficiently, reliably and responsibly.
Its vision is
“Connecting you to your energy today, trusted to help you meet your energy needs tomorrow”
National Grid’s UK and EU Annual Priorities
are as follows:
- Achieve our safest year ever.
- Invest in our people to grow skills and capability.
- Embed performance excellence as our way of working.
- Outperform our regulatory and commercial contracts.
- Improve the customer experience and stakeholder engagement.
- Shape developments in the UK and EU energy industry.
- Develop opportunities for future growth
National Grid owns the high-voltage electricity transmission network in England and Wales and operates the system across Great Britain. It also owns and operates the high pressure gas transmission system in Britain and its distribution business delivers gas to 11 million homes and businesses
How to become a National Grid Supplier
It is National Grid’s policy to procure goods and services
- competitively,
- economically,
- ethically and
- efficiently
– in accordance with all applicable legislative requirements. In particular, sourcing activities comply with the requirements of the
Utilities Contracts Regulations.
First tier suppliers of transmission and distribution equipment are assessed as part of the tender evaluation process.
Suppliers are assessed on
- tender price,
- tender compliance,
- capability
- performance.
National Grid utilises the Achilles Utilities Vendor Database (UVDB) of suppliers when compiling lists of potential vendors for its goods and services requirements. For the majority of our purchases, it is a condition of supplying to National Grid that vendors are registered on the UVDB.
For certain high risk categories, vendors are further required to submit to the Achilles Verify process, whereby a thorough assessment of Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental capabilities is undertaken and an evaluation rating produced.
For categories with a high risk in terms of Human Rights or Climate Change vendors will be required to complete a National Grid questionnaire which may subsequently be followed up by a site audit.
The UVDB/Verify system is a key part of our risk management strategy, ensuring that all suppliers demonstrate the expected capabilities.
Acting Responsibly
It is National Grid’s policy to source goods and services competitively, economically, ethically and efficiently in accordance with all applicable legislative requirements. In particular, sourcing activities comply with the requirements of the Utilities Contracts Regulations.
- We will deal fairly with our suppliers and contractors, and will work to develop relationships with them based on honesty, fairness and mutual trust.
- We will settle bills on time and will work with suppliers and contractors to ensure that no bribery or excess gifts/hospitality are solicited, accepted or given.
- We seek to do business with suppliers and contractors who share the business values set out in our Supplier Code of Conduct.
- We will not work with suppliers and contractors who do not respect the law or whose reputation will endanger our own.
National Grid Standard Conditions of Purchase
It is National Grid policy to procure goods and services competitively, economically, ethically and efficiently in accordance with all applicable legislative requirements. A strategic sourcing methodology is followed, utilising a competitive tendering process. Underpinning this approach are our standard conditions of contract as follows:
- Conditions of Contract for Consultancy
- Conditions of Contract for Supply of Goods
- Conditions of Contract for Term Service
- Conditions of Contract for Innovation (NIA/NIC funded)
